Remembering Steve - 2

Steve has had his heavenly home for two years today. It is a day of remembering him, I still miss him and guess I always will.
We teased him as a kid, for his bottom lip that would protrude in a pout, no one could do it better. He was lucky too, like the time he was shooting his BB gun in the barn and it ricocheted back at him, landing in the lens of his glasses. He had a lifetime love of animals, especially dogs. I can picture him sleeping on the couch with a dog snuggling on his chest or playing on the floor with a dog and his toys. He loved old movies - westerns and war movies were favorites. He loved history.
Steve loved to travel and later in his life loved taking photos of those places, bringing his adventures back to the rest of us.
He was a techie and because of that we were able to keep in touch no matter how many miles were between us. We talked via video cams on the internet back when it wasn't as popular as it is now. He'd make the rounds talking to each member of the family via video after his cancer diagnosis and it was such a blessing to be able to see him and see how he felt and if he didn't call you knew it was a bad day. Those last visits on the video with him are ingrained in my memories since I couldn't be there with him.
Because he's gone doesn't mean he was a saint. We fought, had times of silence, shouted... but those times aren't what I remember. It's the protective big brother full of mishief, advice, smiles and love that I remember. Those cherished memories live in my heart forever.
May you not have to say good-bye to someone too soon due to cancer. The assurance of everlasting life through our belief in God, does give us comfort that we will be together again.

John 14:1-3 (New Living Translation) “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

Remembering Steve

“There is only one path to Heaven. On Earth, we call it Love.”

It’s not the fact that Steve died a year ago today that is most important, it’s that he lived. He still had more dreams to fulfill, my heart aches he didn’t get to complete all his wishes. I miss him. My big brother, protector, advice giver, memory companion, confidant,…
Christmas in Heaven
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, with tiny lights like HEAVEN’S STARS, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, for I am spending CHRISTMAS WITH JESUS CHRIST this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, but the sound of music can't compare with the CHRISTMAS CHOIR up here.
I have no words to tell you of the joy their voices bring, for it is beyond description to HEAR THE ANGELS SING.
I know HOW MUCH YOU MISS ME, I see the pain inside your heart, for I am spending CHRISTMAS WITH JESUS CHRIST this year.
I can't tell you of the splendor or the peace here in this place, can you just imagine CHRISTMAS WITH OUR SAVIOR face to face?
I'll ask him to LIFT YOUR SPIRIT as I tell him of your love, so then PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER as you lift your eyes above.
Please let your HEARTS BE JOYFUL and let your SPIRIT SING, for I am spending CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN and I’m walking WITH THE KING.

God Gave Us Memories

God has given us so many "gifts"... one I treasure is family.
The photo of the rose above was taken by my brother Steve. ( I added the J.M. Barrie quote and changed the colors of the photo.) He passed away a year ago, on December 19th. As I think back on Christmas memories, it's as if Steve is right here with us.

Christmas scenes from 1961

Diane and Steve, for many years we'd dress up and portray Mary and Joseph during the Christmas season, acting out the manger scene. The manger was an old suitcase stand, the doll my sister Debbie's and of course bathrobes served as our costumes.

Debbie and Steve as Mary and Joseph. "Baby Jesus" laid on a pillow in our upstairs hallway.

Showing off their Christmas gifts. Remember cap guns with the tape you'd load the mini guns with and it'd pop when you'd pull the trigger? Joe and Steve have those tucked in their pajama bottoms along with showing off their guns and holsters.
Christmas Morning. Nurse Debbie standing in the back with Diane, Joe and Steve down front, playing with their new toys.

Photos By Steve

Sharing some of my brother Steve's photos with you.

Mirror Lake, Yosemite National Park, CA, 2004.
Steve hiked here in 2004. Mt. Watkins is reflected in the water. Mirror Lake is turning into Mirror Meadow, (a natural process common with mountain lakes). It is only a "lake" in the spring and early summer. After that, it becomes "Mirror Puddle" then "Mirror Sandbar".

Hearst Castle Gardens, CA, 2006.
I put the words on the photo.

The Sphinx, Egypt, 2005.
Steve and his friend Rebecca went to Egypt in January of 2005 on a trip with the University of Fresno. He loved this trip and all he saw and experienced. Here is the Great Sphinx of Giza (c. 2500 BC) in front of one of the Great Pyramids. My Dad has always had an interest in the pyramids so Steve especially enjoyed sharing his trip with Dad. He wanted to go back someday...

Kings Canyon National Park, CA, 2006.
Steve and I were together when he took this photo of a hidden waterfall we found back away from the main road. I remember he had to walk through some mist from the waterfall to get into position, the rush of the water was quite loud and I remember worrying he would slip on the wet rocks he was climbing over. We were excited about finding this unexpected view.

Yosemite National Park, CA, November 2003.
Probably taken on one of Steve's first visits to Yosemite. He e-mailed this shot back to family after a day of exploring and hiking the trails. I wonder if the clouds contain winter snow at the top of the mountains.

Hearst Castle Gardens, CA, 2006.
Steve's camera had all the filters, lenses and attachments and he could get the close ups of the flowers so beautifully.

The Johnsons, Mesa, AZ, 2006.
Christmas Day, our last Christmas with all six of us together. We're on the patio at Mom and Dad's winter home in Mesa Spirits. We had all just gone swimming and were all dried off and ready to smile. Steve set up his tripod and took this shot.

Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.

Happy Birthday Memories

Tomorrow is my brother's birthday.
Here is a photo of Steve on his first birthday. It was common for us to be placed on the dining room table with our cake for the photo op when we were small.
Last year I was recuperating from pneumonia and happened to be on the farm when he was home for a visit, days surrounding his birthday. Dad had had artery surgery the week before so Mom had her hands full taking care of everyone, while I tried not to breathe on Steve or Dad. On Steve's birthday, Mom, Steve and I went to Sioux Falls together. We went down to the Sioux River Falls to view the falls and then went to the Washington Pavilion to see a movie about dolphins in their large domed theater. I remember they had a car outside the pavilion that was balanced so a quick pull of a rope lifted the car. I can visualize Steve going over to lift the car with little effort. I wish I had my camera with me to capture that moment but it is engraved in my memory. I didn't feel very well that day and was still weak but it was all in God's plan... I came home for Dad's surgery and to see Steve with a long weekend away from school, caught pneumonia and was down and out for a few days, staying an extra week than originally planned, and because of all those happenings, got to spend his last birthday with him and my last time with him in person. Indulge me as I share a few photos and memories through the years of Steve, I miss him...

Cowboy Steve, five year old desperado. This reminds me of a time when all us kids were pretending to be the Cartwrights of Bonanza and were riding our horses by jumping on the davenport (not acceptable practice according to Mom and Dad) We had a record of the music from Bonanza and would often put the record on to "go riding" One day while riding Mom quietly walked in on us. Slowly one by one we stopped; Joe, Deb, Diane... while Steve continued at a full gallop urging the rest of us to get back on our horses,... until he saw Mom standing at the end of the couch watching. As an adult I can now imagine how difficult it was for mom not to smile and laugh at the scene she came in on.

1964, At Lake Alvin across the river in SD, a few miles from church. Family friend Otto Lund had his boat there and we had a family day at the lake. Steve found a frog. He always came up with frogs and turtles, snakes and things. He even had a rock and shell collection that's on the farm somewhere.

1970, A sophomore in high school.

Steve and his 350 Yahama, his first bike. I remember going to watch him and other area guys race in the back fields or hill climb up Lynch's hill. It made Mom nervious so I'm sure she never knew all of what he did on the bike. A good friend, Karl, owns the bike now.

Steve and I fixed the Thanksgiving turkey back in 1977. Mom and Dad had gone up to Fairbault, MN to be with Debbie as she had hand surgery the days before and they were all due to return on Thanksgiving Day. Steve and I were supposed to get the meal prepared. It was a first for both of us. We laughed so hard cleaning out the bird it was a turkey experience we never forgot. Look at all that hair on his face and head!

Grandview Covenant Church made a church directory back in the 90's. The photographer set up in the basement of the church and did a good job getting a smile out of Steve.

Back in 2004 with his new Harley at Yosemite. He loved riding his bike. We were glad the year before his death he got to ride it so many places. California, Yellowstone, the Continental Divide, Devils Tower, the Black Hills and the Sturgis Rally and back home in and around Larchwood. It was hard on him later when he couldn't ride safely anymore. He tipped it a few times pulling into a parking lot or driveway, they are pretty heavy bikes. He continued taking photos for his Harley group in Fresno up until October 2007. He'd drive his truck to the events and help in any way he could, that way staying close to the biking community.

At Sequoia National Park. Steve and I enjoyed walking the trails around the big trees. Steve wasn't big on having his photo taken so I had to sneak in a few and got quite good at it. This was taken at the end of the trail in 6/2006.

The Christmas holidays in 2006. Steve drove to AZ from CA and connected with Joe in Phoenix. They drove down to Tucson to pick up Deb and bring her back to Mesa at Mom and Dads. Here's Steve on Deb's computer with her cat, Max, looking on. Max loves the computer, especially the printer. It was the first time in many years we were all together for Christmas (and the last.) We went swimming on Christmas Day, a first for all of the Johnsons used to snow and ice on Christmas. Happy Birthday big brother.

Stand Up 2 Cancer

I just watched the Stand Up 2 Cancer special. It was moving and emotional, made me think of my brother Steve. He was diagnosed with gastric cancer August 8, 2005, after a courageous battle he lost his fight December 19, 2007.
Since Steve was diagnosed, my eyes opened to how many other people have been affected by cancer, just on my little street the four houses around me have someone with a mother who is a breast cancer survivor, a son in law who died of lung cancer, a daughter fighting colon cancer, a survivor of bladder cancer and me with Steve who died of stomach cancer. This touched my little neighborhood since 2005 when Steve was diagnosed.
Click on the colored Stand Up 2 Cancer above to go to their link, donate if you can. Hopefully some research funded by this event will help turn the corner on this fight for everyone.

Steve's Caringbridge

Left: Yosemite National Park

I sent my blog URL out to different people when I started doing this and one person I sent it to was our former exchange student, Carmen from Chile. She lived with our family back in 1972. Carmen and her husband Dennis live in New Zealand now, where they own a translation business. She summed up my enjoyment of writing this blog in an e-mail I received from her this morning. She said my writing on Steve's Caringbridge site for so long gave me lots of practice. How true she is, also reminds me of how tough it was to stop writing once he died. I had written on that for 2 1/2 years so it was also a kind of therapy for me, being able to connect with everyone and share the joys and struggles our family went through with Steve's battle. The best part of a Caringbridge site is the number of people you can keep informed of things. You start to forget who you've told something to and I know people don't want to bother you by asking, especially when things aren't going well. The guestbook messages were special to our whole family including Steve.
Anyway, I said I'd pass on some photographs Steve took on the blog, so here are some for you to enjoy and if you knew him, remember him by.

Yosemite and Steve

My brother, Steve, passed away from gastric cancer on December 19, 2007. When he moved to Fresno, CA in 2003, he found a love for the three National Parks near Fresno; Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite. When he first moved to the area, he would drive to Yosemite and hike the different trails, explore the history of the area and soak in the nature that was so unlike the plains of Iowa where he grew up.
Whenever family or friends came to the area, Steve was sure to take them to one or all of the parks. When I went out to be with him for his surgery to remove his stomach, back in 2005, he kept on suggesting to my sister Deb and I to take an afternoon trip to one of the parks since I had not been there before. Of course we wouldn't hear anything of it, as we were there to give him support and sightseeing wasn't a consideration. All he was going through, he still had a love and pride for the nature around him.
When I went back out for a visit the next summer, Steve was eager to take me to the parks and I looked forward to the trips. We photographed the area, exploring what could be our best shots, got excited when thunder clouds crept into the valley at Kings Canyon making the view incredible, we got interested in the variety of bark textures on the trees and how the elements gave each one it's own identity, and of course all the waterfalls in Yosemite gave us pause for reflection.
I wanted to paint a scene of Yosemite for Steve and gave him this painting for Christmas in 2006.

Because Yosemite was "heaven on earth" to Steve it has become special to our whole family. We all have had our photo taken at this view. If Steve's spirit is traveling this earth, I imagine he has finally soared to the top of half dome (He had wanted to hike to the top, but never got the chance before his cancer was found.), the peak is in the center, off in the distance of the scene above.

We treasure the photos he took on his many adventures. I'm sure I will post some of them in the weeks and months ahead. I'm now the caretaker of his camera in the photo above, may the viewfinder point it's way to the wonders God has placed before us.
